Nuffield Health Leeds is an independent hospital which is part of the Nuffield Health corporate group. Services are offered to both NHS and privately funded patients. We carried out an unannounced responsive on-site inspection of surgery services on 10 and 11 September 2024, followed by a further day on site on 18 September. We completed further inspection and assessment work offsite following this. We reviewed all quality statements for the safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led key questions. The rating for Nuffield Health Leeds has been combined with ratings from previous inspections for all other services.

Nuffield Health Leeds is an independent hospital which is part of the Nuffield Health corporate group. We carried out an unannounced responsive on-site inspection of surgery services on 10 and 11 September 2024, followed by a further day on site on 18 September. Services are offered to both NHS and privately funded patients. We reviewed all quality statements for the safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led key questions. The overall rating for this service is good. Ratings for safe changed from good to requires improvement. Effective stayed the same as the last inspection. Caring, responsive and well led changed from outstanding to good. We found 5 breaches of regulation in person centred care, safe care and treatment, need for consent, premises and equipment and good governance.
Services for children & young people

Services for children and young people were a small proportion of hospital activity. Where arrangements were the same, we have reported findings in the Surgery section. The hospital has a nine-bed children’s unit for day case and inpatient surgical care.
We rated this service as good for safe, caring, responsive and well-led. We inspected but did not rate effective due to insufficient evidence being available for patient outcomes.

Critical care services were a small proportion of hospital activity. Where arrangements were the same, we have reported findings in the Surgery section. The hospital has an eight-bed critical care unit providing level 2 and 3 care.
We rated this service as good for safe, caring, responsive and well-led and requires improvement for effective.
Outpatients and diagnostic imaging

Services for outpatients and diagnostic imaging were a small proportion of hospital activity. Where arrangements were the same, we have reported findings in the Surgery section.
We rated this service as outstanding for caring and responsive and good for safe and well-led. We inspected but did not rate effective as we are currently not confident that we are collecting sufficient evidence to rate effectiveness for Outpatients and Diagnostic Imaging services.
